Sitting down?  Good.  I’m not sure where to go with this story.  I suppose there are those who want to use it to indict socialized-medicine.  Haven’t thought that through and don’t care to at this point.  Could very well be a factor or could very well be totally unrelated.  For now, this is simply an act of evil, injustice, a violation of basic human rights, and I dare say, a byproduct of a non-transcendent divinely-based view of ethics and human nature.  We do this to animals.  We “put them out of their misery” by judging their quality of life to be something less than it should be.  We don’t do this to human person, or so I thought, because we have believed that there is something special, metaphysically unique, about human persons affording them rights, dignity, and value at every stage of life and health.  But when the philosophically justifiable grounds erode, when God becomes ignored as a relevant thought-shaper in the operations of society  (as Neitzche meant when he declared “God is Dead”), at some point the practices, the ethical baggage of God, now detached from their philosophical roots, begin to expire.  A practice with no compelling philosophical basis will eventually be sidestepped.  When practices do not flow from logical necessities, they often stop flowing altogether.  I’d contend that this is why chattel race-based slavery could not last, ultimately, in the Judeo-Christian world and why this shocking story exists today.  Slavery in the west could not survive for long given the foundation of the society in which it functioned.  Do away with that foundation, you get this to varying degrees at some point in time:

From the Daily Mail:

Sick children are being discharged from NHS hospitals to die at home or in hospices on controversial ‘death pathways’.

Until now, end of life regime the Liverpool Care Pathway was thought to have involved only elderly and terminally-ill adults.

But the Mail can reveal the practice of withdrawing food and fluid by tube is being used on young patients as well as severely disabled newborn babies.

One doctor has admitted starving and dehydrating ten babies to death in the neonatal unit of one hospital alone.

Writing in a leading medical journal, the physician revealed the process can take an average of ten days during which a  baby becomes ‘smaller and shrunken’.

The LCP – on which 130,000 elderly and terminally-ill adult patients die each year – is now the subject of an independent inquiry ordered by ministers.
