Explaining income mobility

25 Jul

A rather lengthy study of the causes of inter-generational income mobility has been summarized in a recent New York Times article.  The authors conclude that when it comes to income mobility, it’s location, location, location.  That’s an important finding, as far as it goes.  But though the authors do allude to it sort of obliquely, I imagine (and intend to test at some point) that the real thing about location is this: if you want to experience great income mobility, don’t be located in a place where the norm is out-of-wedlock births, divorce, and single-parenthood.
